To water or not to water your terrarium?

How to care for open terrariums without lids

Your plants should be watered with bottled water or rainwater, free of chemicals and chlorine that is found in tap water. To avoid over-watering, use a water bottle or syringe to thoroughly water the plants and the top 1/4” of the soil. Terrariums should never be placed in direct sunlight. They will thrive in bright, natural indirect lighting. They will need watered about once a week depending on the lighting. You will notice the top layer of soil getting dry when it needs watered.

When the plants in your terrarium become too leggy or overgrown, prune your plants down accordingly. For a small fee, we can perform seasonal maintenance and/or plant replacement.

How to care for closed terrariums with lids

Make sure to hide it from direct sunlight! If your terrarium gets too much light, the heat starts to build up inside and has no way out for long periods of time. This causes very high temperatures in terrariums, which also burn your plants. This is the Greenhouse Effect.

Closed terrariums rarely need watered, which is why they make GREAT gifts for people that kill plants. To gauge if it has enough water for the location you have chosen in your home or office, start observing the inside glass for condensation. Condensation in closed terrariums is normal and usually occurs twice a day (morning and evening) but if you notice it fogged up day and night, it is too wet. Leave the lid open for a day or so and close the lid. Repeat until the condensation only occurs twice a day for a few hours.
